In the summer of 1965 Fred De Luca started his first sandwich shop 17 years old with $1000 he had borrowed from nuclear physicist Peter Buck. The sandwich business was originally a way to get money to go to college. The shop struggled through its first year. Fred then decided to dream of becoming a physician and set himself the goal of opening 5000 Subways by 1994. In 1993 he passed his goal of 5000 shops, and he was opening nearly 100 stores a month.
